A Black Friday like no other

Innovation is a quality that defines BBQ Québec as a whole. Indeed, our company aims to be innovative in the way it shares its knowledge and demonstrates its love for BBQ.

So, for Black Friday we opted for a different approach to traditional displays; we favored gamification. For those who are not familiar with the term, it is actually about adding game elements into processes that are not primarily intended to be fun, in order to ultimately create an interactive and dynamic experience that will increase consumer engagement and participation.

This is not the first time that BBQ Québec has used this strategy in its marketing projects, but we are constantly learning from one project to another and continue to perfect our approach.


This year, Black Friday isn’t just one day, it’s a full week. With 2020 being what it is, we made sure people could discover and benefit from our promotions both in-store and online. To get our customers even more excited, we immersed them in a story: JP, our BBQ Master, has been given a bad spell and is stuck in an elevator. To get out, he must do good deeds and offer discounts to our customers.


By using social media to spread our messages, it was easy to engage with our community and create excitement for the event. Every two days, a challenge was presented: subscribers had to spot the differences between two photos, JP had to call on a friend to do a good deed, Max had to set up a BBQ in less than 25 minutes, subscribers had to help JP answer a charade, and finally, JP and Max had to face off in a shooting match. Once each challenge was completed, another video featured one of the products on sale during Black Friday.


Despite the pandemic guidelines, we are proud to have managed to create an entertaining and fun experience for everyone. Through games and entertainment, we captured the attention of our customers, created engagement and generated interest in our Black Friday event in an original way that was truly different from other retailers — and being different pays off. Indeed, thinking about setting up an unusual project often takes more time, but in the end, it is this project that ensures that the company remains in the minds of customers and stands out. Of course, the success of our communications is also due to all our customers who support us and motivate us to create extraordinary projects, so on behalf of BBQ Québec, I thank you and promise that we have more to surprise you!
