Step 3 of an outdoor kitchen project — know the deadlines

Étape 3 d’un projet de cuisine extérieure — connaître les délais

Text by: Sébastien Lacroix and Olivier Soucy

So there you have it. You know what you want in your outdoor kitchen and have a rough idea of how much you want to spend to get it.

Now all that remains is to clarify your needs and specify the completion deadlines so that you can fully enjoy your outdoor kitchen. 🙌

Obviously, depending on the complexity of your request, the waiting time may be more or less long. What can affect the time? We'll tell you more about it here.

1. The time for designing and installing the modules

One of the most important things to know about having an outdoor kitchen is that you don't want to leave it to the last minute. If you want to take advantage of it during the big BBQ season, that is, in the summer, you don't want to start the process on July 15th, say. The earlier you start, the better. (And, not only because the design can take time; because you have to consider the availability of BBQ heads, and because outdoor kitchens are becoming more and more popular, so the demand is always increasing.)

Again, every company has different timelines and different offers, so it's hard to predict exactly how long your project will take, but we estimate the wait time to be between 2-12 weeks. So keep that in mind when you're reaching out to us about your project. (The sooner you tell us, the sooner you can be in your flip-flops, grilling on the BBQ, with a beverage in your hand. 🍹)

2. The steps of an outdoor kitchen

The weeks of waiting may seem long and numerous to you. Well, that's because, you may not realize it, but an outdoor kitchen goes through the following steps:

  1. Looking for ideas and items to include in the outdoor kitchen;
  2. Meeting with an expert in the field;
  3. Taking measurements of the location of the future kitchen;
  4. Sending the request for modules to the supplier;
  5. Land leveling (if necessary);
  6. Laying pipes for water, gas and/or electricity (if necessary);
  7. Construction of the “floor” under the kitchen (if necessary);
  8. Installation of outdoor kitchen modules and counters;
  9. Plumbing connection (if necessary);
  10. Inserting the BBQ(s);
  11. Gas supply (if required);
  12. Using the grill(s)!

The 2 to 12 weeks we talked about earlier actually constitute steps 4 to 12 (so, we say it again, don't wait too long before coming to see us!). On this subject, it is important to remember that phases 1 to 12 are not necessarily all done by the same individuals, so there may be a gap between each of them or some may happen simultaneously.

3. Things to do in the meantime

While you wait between each step, there are a few things you can do on your end to speed up the process. For example, if you're handy, you can do your own excavation (we recommend that your outdoor kitchen sits on concrete slabs, a deck on piles, or tiles on pedestals), or contact the professionals you want to work with for electrical, etc.

Otherwise, live in the moment to the fullest and take your mind off things by cooking your favourite meals on the BBQ.
